The invention provides a real-time road congestion detection method. The method comprises steps: a driving datum of a floating vehicle is acquired; whether the speed of the driving datum is smaller than a preset speed threshold is judged, and if yes, the position point is recorded as a first position point; according to a preset acquisition cycle, a next driving datum is acquired; the relative speed between the position point for the next driving datum and the first position point is calculated; and whether the speed of the next driving datum is smaller than the preset speed threshold is judged and simultaneously whether the relative speed is smaller than the preset relative speed threshold, if both are yes, the position point corresponding to the next driving datum is recorded as a first state position point. A driving state change position point of the floating vehicle can be accurately acquired and can serve as basis for analyzing a road condition of the road where the floating vehicle is, and scientific basis is provided for acquiring road condition information with high timeliness and high accuracy.
