The invention discloses a real-time vehicle speed measuring system and method based on a vehicle side image. The method comprises the steps that 1, a camera obtains the vehicle side image in real time; step 2, placing a calibration plate on a lane in front of the camera for calibration to obtain a perspective transformation matrix; step 3, obtaining the pixel displacement of the vehicle between two frames by using a phase correlation method and an optical flow method for the vehicle side image in the step 1; 4, using a YOLOv8 model to identify the tire position in the vehicle image for the vehicle side image in the step 1; and 5, according to the pixel displacement in the step 3 and the tire position in the step 4, obtaining the actual moving distance between the two frames of the vehicle by using a perspective transformation matrix, and obtaining the real-time speed of the vehicle. By detecting the inter-frame displacement of the vehicle side image when the vehicle passes, the real-time speed of the vehicle can be obtained, and the device is low in cost and easy to install and maintain.
