A diagnostic system for a twin propeller drive unit, in particular a diagnostic system for a marine propeller drive unit, the drive unit being a self-balancing drive unit comprising a differential device that distributes a drive torque of a motor between at least two propellers, the diagnostic system comprising a processing circuit, and a processing circuit connected to a speed sensor system connected to the differential device to provide speed data indicative of a rotational speed of the at least one propeller shaft to the processing circuit and a control unit associated with the motor, the control unit providing current data indicative of a motor current drawn by the motor to the processing circuit, a processing circuit monitors the current data and the speed data and classifies a state of the self-balancing propeller drive unit into a predetermined number of states including one or more fault states based on the current data and the speed data, the processing circuitry triggers an action of the diagnostic system in a case where the state of the self-balancing propeller drive unit is classified as a fault state.
