The invention relates to a braking method and a braking system. The braking method can be executed by an electromechanical braking system which comprises at least one shaft control unit and a plurality of electromechanical braking devices which are arranged at the wheel ends and are driven by a motor to apply friction braking force to the wheels. Wherein the at least one shaft control unit controls the electromechanical brake device to switch between a state in which friction braking is not applied and a state in which friction braking is applied in response to a braking demand. The braking method comprises the steps that the brake clearance between the brake pad and the brake disc is made to be an initial value; determining that a braking demand exists; determining to generate regenerative braking; and in response to the generation of regenerative braking, setting the brake clearance to a preset value, where the preset value is less than the initial value. The brake clearance is reduced before the friction brake demand is generated, and the time for responding to the friction brake demand is shortened, so that the conversion between friction brake and regenerative brake is smoother, and the pause feeling during brake switching is effectively reduced.
