The invention relates to a method for automatically controlling a longitudinal movement of a vehicle (1), in which the surroundings of the vehicle (1) and objects located in the surroundings are detected on the basis of a detected signal of a surroundings sensor (5), and a state of a traffic light signaling device (3, 4) at a traffic light signalling intersection (K) is determined, i.e., a state of the traffic light signalling device (3, 4) is determined. The state of the traffic light signal devices (3, 4) needs to be taken into account when the vehicle (1) passes through the intersection (K). According to the invention,-when the vehicle (1) approaches the intersection (K), it is detected that the line of sight of the environment sensor (5) to the traffic light signal device (3, 4) is likely to be blocked by the preceding vehicle (2),-if it is detected that the line of sight of the environment sensor (5) to the traffic light signal device (3, 4) is likely to be blocked by the preceding vehicle (2),-the vehicle (1) is turned on. According to the invention, a minimum distance (xv) of the vehicle (1) from the preceding vehicle (2) is determined on the basis of the current position of the vehicle (1) with respect to the traffic light signaling device (3, 4) and with respect to the preceding vehicle (2), on the basis of which the automatic control of the longitudinal movement is carried out and the vehicle (1) remains not below the minimum distance.
