Various applications for the use of mass estimates for vehicles include controlling the operation of the vehicles, sharing the mass estimates with other vehicles and/or a network operating center (NOC), managing vehicles operating in a formation, and managing the mass estimates in the formation. And/or partially controlling operation of one or more vehicles operating in the formation based on the relative mass estimation between the vehicles running in the formation. When vehicles are operating in a formation, the relative mass between a leading vehicle and a following vehicle may be used to scale torque and/or braking commands generated by the leading vehicle and sent to the following vehicle.
