The release of the electromechanical parking brake is controlled by measuring a change in the intensity (I) of the current supplied to the control motor or a function derived therefrom, and by prolonging the release of the brake only for a determined duration ([Delta] t) after the intensity is stabilized, in order to unnecessarily increase the idle stroke of the actuator of the brake, and the control duration is not prolonged. The determined duration ([Delta] t) also depends on the temperature and the hydraulic pressure in the brake.
