The invention relates to a device (100) having a magneto-rheological brake device (1) and a method for braking a relative movement, comprising at least two brake parts (2, 3), a receiving space (4) having a brake gap (5) being formed between the brake parts (2, 3), in which receiving space a magneto-rheological medium (9) which can be influenced by a magnetic field and has magnetically polarizable particles (20) is filled, the device comprises at least one electric coil unit (24) for generating a controllable magnetic field (8) in the brake gap (5). At least some of the magnetically polarizable particles (20) are designed to form an inclined structure (15) under the influence of the magnetic field (8) and to be clamped against each other under the control of the magnetic field (8).
