The engine torque control method for the hybrid electric vehicle power system comprises the steps that the current working state of the vehicle power system is judged to be direct drive, parallel drive or series drive; selecting a corresponding torque control mode according to the corresponding working state of the current vehicle power system; and acquiring an engine torque request value of the vehicle power system according to the corresponding torque control mode. The working state of the current vehicle power system is judged, so that the corresponding torque control mode is selected, and the motor torque and the engine torque in the power system in different working states are calculated and limited, so that the engine torque of the hybrid electric vehicle is always kept within a reasonable range; therefore, the working state of the engine is optimized, and the service life of the power source of the hybrid electric vehicle is prolonged.
