The device is configured to be mounted at the bottom of the autonomous vehicle and comprises at least one optical depth sensor and at least one optical projection module, the at least one optical projection module is configured to project a light beam on a road on which the autonomous vehicle is traveling, the light beam is floodlight or a predefined pattern, and the projection module is configured to project the light beam on the road. And the at least one optical depth sensor is configured to detect a projection of the light beam on the road so as to be able to extract therefrom information relating to a movement of the autonomous vehicle along the road being traveled.
