An unmanned aerial vehicle and a method of operating the same are disclosed. The unmanned aerial vehicle comprises a rechargeable battery; a power interface for electrically coupling to an external power source; a charging circuit operable to charge the rechargeable battery using current from the power interface; and one or more control systems configured to perform operations including: determining that the unmanned aerial vehicle has reached a delivery location while performing a transport task; in response to determining that the unmanned aerial vehicle has reached the delivery location, initiating a notification process to request a recipient-assisted recharging process; determining that the recipient-assisted recharging process has recharged a battery of the unmanned aerial vehicle to a target level; based on determining that the recipient-assisted recharging process has recharged the battery of the unmanned aerial vehicle to the target level, an additional notification process is initiated to request (i) manually assisted disconnection of the unmanned aerial vehicle from the power source, and (ii) recipient-assisted placement of the unmanned aerial vehicle in a location where the unmanned aerial vehicle can initiate the second flight segment.
