The invention relates to an air management system (10) and a method for controlling an intake pressure and an exhaust back pressure of a fuel cell system (1). The invention also relates to a device comprising a fuel cell system and such an air management system, and to a vehicle. The air management system comprises: air pressurization means (3) arranged to supply intake air to an air compressor of the fuel cell system; a pressure regulating device (4) arranged to regulate the exhaust gas back pressure; a pressure detection device (5) for detecting ambient air pressure; a control device (6) configured to control the air pressurization device and the valve as a function of the detected ambient air pressure, in which the control device is configured to control the intake air pressure to a predetermined first pressure level and to control the exhaust back pressure to a predetermined second pressure level.
