The invention relates to a device for operating a motor vehicle, in which a steering system has an actuatable steering handle and at least one steerable wheel, in which the steering handle is mechanically disengaged from the wheel in such a way that the actuation of the steering handle is independent of the steering of the wheel, a controllable steering handle actuator is associated with the steering handle in order to generate a torque acting on the steering handle, and wherein a controllable wheel actuator is associated with the wheel in order to influence a wheel steering angle of the wheel, having a computing device which is designed to actuate the steering handle actuator and the wheel actuator. According to the invention, the computing device is designed to specify a target manual torque for the steering handle as a function of a target variable that can be specified by the driver assistance system and to actuate the steering handle actuator as a function of the specified target manual torque.
