The control unit (130) is configured to generate (520) a pattern indicative of a concentration of molecules in the air, compare (530) at least a portion of the generated pattern to at least one reference pattern, and generate (540) a detection result to express one of i) normal operation of the escalator (100), ii) failure of the escalator (100). The invention also relates to a method, a control unit and a computer program product thereof.
