The invention relates to a method for determining a clamping force (FSpann) of a brake system (9) of a motor vehicle (1), the motor vehicle (1) having at least one rotatably mounted wheel (4) and a brake system (8), the brake system (8) having at least one brake system (9) and at least one electric motor (13), wherein the brake device (9) has a brake element which is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the wheel (4) and at least one brake body which can be pressed against the brake element, and wherein the electric motor (13) has a motor winding and a rotatably mounted rotor which is coupled to the brake body by means of a transmission device (14), the invention relates to a method for operating a brake element of a transmission device (14) in such a way that a clamping force (FSpann) can be generated by rotation of a rotor, by means of which clamping force (FSpann) a brake body is pressed against the brake element, the rotor being rotatable by applying a motor current (IMot) to a motor winding, the angle of rotation of the rotor and/or the displacement distance of a movably mounted element of the transmission device (14) being determined, and wherein the magnitude of the generated clamping force (FSpann) is determined as a function of the angle of rotation and/or the displacement distance. According to the invention, the magnitude of the motor current (IMot) is determined, and the magnitude of the clamping force (FSpann) is determined as a function of the magnitude of the motor current (IMot). A further aspect of the invention relates to a device for determining a clamping force of a brake system of a motor vehicle.
