The invention relates to a protocol for discharging DC power from a propulsion battery pack to an off-board charging station. A method for coordinating a discharge session in which direct current power is offloaded from a power source, such as an electric vehicle (EV), to a bi-directional off-vehicle charging station includes exchanging charging data between the EV and the charging station in response to the power source being connected to the charging station via a set of charging lines. This occurs on the low voltage communication line, where the charging data includes power and current limits of the EV and the charging station. In response to the limit indicating a negative limit representing a request for a discharge session, the method includes transmitting the EV power and current limit to the charging station to confirm the request. In response to acknowledging the request by an exchange of a unique identifier indicating support for the discharge session, the discharge session is initiated.
