A control unit (CU) for an electric vehicle includes a control pilot (CP) transmitting unit (CPS), a CP receiving unit (CPR), and a semiconductor switching device. A CP transmitting unit (CPS) is configured to generate and transmit a CP signal, and a CP receiving unit (CPR) is configured to receive the CP signal. An input (CPin) of a CP receiving unit (CPR) for receiving CP signals and an output (CPout) of a CP transmitting unit (CPS) for transmitting CP signals are directly connected to a single connector pin (PINc) of the control unit. The CP transmitting unit (CPS) includes a buffer (OA) configured to output a pulse width modulated signal, and the semiconductor switching device is configured to connect the buffer (OA) to the at least one supply voltage during a CP transmitting mode and disconnect the buffer (OA) from the at least one supply voltage during a CP receiving mode.
