The invention discloses a lower-end friction wheel driving mechanism for a handrail belt of an escalator. The escalator comprises a step chain and the handrail belt. The lower end friction wheel driving mechanism comprises a rotary chain wheel in transmission fit with the step chain, a first chain wheel arranged on a central shaft of the rotary chain wheel, a friction wheel in transmission fit with the hand strap, and a second chain wheel arranged on a central shaft of the friction wheel; the driving chain is connected between the first chain wheel and the second chain wheel; and the auxiliary tensioning device is used for adjusting the tightness degree of the driving chain. The structure of the escalator or the moving sidewalk is used for replacing a conventionally-adopted handrail belt auxiliary driving device, a motor does not need to be additionally arranged for providing driving force, lower end auxiliary driving is effectively provided for the handrail belt, the manufacturing cost is saved, and the structure is safe and reliable.
