A system for estimating a pitch profile for a road factor includes a first module and a second module. A first module includes instructions that cause the one or more processors to receive data related to road factor behaviors and characteristics of road factors detected in an environment of the autonomous vehicle, initiate analysis of the road factor behaviors, and estimate a pitch profile of the road factors as part of the analysis. The pitch profile includes lateral gap preferences, and one or more predicted behaviors of road factors associated with changes in the lateral gap. A second module includes instructions that cause the one or more processors to: determine one or more components of the autonomous vehicle maneuver based on the estimated spacing profile, and send control instructions for performing the autonomous vehicle maneuver.
