The range extender comprises an engine, the two-gear speed change mechanism, a control signal line, a transmission control unit (TCU), a hydraulic control unit (HCU) and an electric generator, an input shaft of the two-gear speed change mechanism is connected with the engine, the hydraulic control unit (HCU) is arranged in the two-gear speed change mechanism, and an output shaft of the two-gear speed change mechanism is connected with the electric generator. The transmission control unit (TCU) is electrically connected with the hydraulic control unit (HCU) through a control signal line, the generator is connected with an output shaft of the two-gear speed change mechanism, and the invention belongs to the technical field of transmissions, and particularly relates to a range extender of the two-gear speed change mechanism and a control method of the range extender. According to the overlap ratio and the maximum output power of the engine and the generator, the speed ratio is selected and optimized, and switching of two gears is decided according to the system efficiency.
