Diagnostics and launch of AV hardware and software of a computer system of an autonomous vehicle may be performed based at least on receiving a shutdown or outage indication, and then a computing state of the computer system may be suspended when the computer system enters a low power mode. In this way, the paused computing state can be quickly restored without reboot and diagnosis of boot-up. To ensure the integrity of the saved computing state, the computer system may exit the low power mode, re-run diagnoses, re-load programs, and then re-enter the low power mode. Resuming the paused computing state may be triggered by a user inserting an ignition key, depressing a button to open the vehicle, opening a door of the vehicle, remotely unlocking the vehicle, remotely starting the vehicle, etc.
