A charging system (11) includes: a main battery (4) that stores electric power for vehicle traveling; an inlet (1) connected to the charging connector (910); a charging relay (31) that switches a path of power from the inlet to the main battery; a converter (25) for reducing the voltage of the power from the inlet; and an ECU (10) that controls the charging relay and the converter. The ECU: controls the converter such that the converter begins to step down the voltage of the power from the inlet to the auxiliary voltage after receiving the power from the inlet (steps S114, S124); supplying power from the converter to the charging relay as operating power for switching to the connected state before the charging relay is switched to the connected state (steps S114, S124); and controls the charging relay such that the charging relay switches from an off state to a connected state using the operating power (steps S117, S127).
