A power distribution system is provided that ensures safe operation of an automobile in an autonomous mode. The system includes a plurality of power rails including a pair of safety critical power rails. Safety switches, vehicle sensors (e.g., vehicle position and obstacle sensors), vehicle actuators (e.g., brake and steering actuators), and autonomous control units are associated with each safety critical power rail. If a fault is detected during vehicle initialization or general operation, the safety switch in which the fault is detected opens and the particular power rail is disconnected from the general power rail and the remaining safety critical power rails. The remaining safety critical power rails can then provide power to a sufficient number of sensors, actuators, and controllers to allow the vehicle to safely and autonomously complete an emergency stop at the roadside.
