The present disclosure relates to a segmented switched reluctance motor for powertrain electrification, wherein a transmission system has a transmission subsystem, a gearbox housing for receiving the transmission subsystem, and a rotor operably associated with the transmission subsystem. The rotor has a weight and size to act as a flywheel. At least one stator pole segment is received within the gearbox housing and has at least one stator winding thereon positioned proximate a surface of the rotor. The inverter is in communication with the stator winding and energizes the winding to rotate the rotor.
