A vehicle driving system enabling safe travel on a narrow road and a method for controlling a vehicle performed by the vehicle driving system are disclosed. A vehicle driving system includes: a sensor configured to monitor an environment external to a vehicle; and a controller configured to recognize an oncoming traveling object through the sensor, derive a width of a travelable road between the traveling object and the vehicle, determine a priority between the traveling object and the vehicle when the width of the travelable road is less than a sum of the widths of the traveling object and the vehicle, and determine a priority between the traveling object and the vehicle when it is determined that the traveling object has the priority. Traveling of the vehicle is controlled to provide a space in a lateral direction of the vehicle to allow passage of a traveling object. The vehicle driving system of the present disclosure can recognize an oncoming traveling object in a crowded narrow road and safely drive a vehicle while avoiding the traveling object.
