A system for predicting a traffic flow pattern from data received from a plurality of sensors, each sensor being configured to acquire data at a respective location within a spatial region of known road layout, and forming an output based on the flow pattern, the system being configured to: receive data from the plurality of sensors; aggregating the received data with historical data from the plurality of sensors within the spatial region according to the road layout; predicting a traffic flow pattern at the location from the aggregated data, and analyzing the received data to identify a deviation between the received data and the predicted traffic flow pattern, and/or analyzing the predicted traffic flow pattern to identify vehicle characteristics therein; and outputting the deviation and/or the vehicle characteristics.
