The collision avoidance device for an automobile comprises: an existing brake mechanism equipped on a vehicle; an actuator for operating the brake mechanism; environmental monitoring equipment which is equipped with a millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera that are mounted on a vehicle and monitor an object in front, or at least with a monocular camera; and a control device (3) for determining information from the environmental monitoring device and controlling the operation of the actuator. The actuator mechanically and directly drives the brake pedal through the speed reducer.
