A method for generating an intermediate waypoint (310) for a navigation system (100) of a robot (10) includes receiving a navigation route (112). The navigation route includes a series of advanced waypoints (210) starting at a starting position (113) and ending at a destination position (114), and is based on advanced navigation data (50) representing a position of a static obstacle in an area to be navigated by the robot. The method also includes receiving image data (17) of an environment (8) surrounding the robot from an image sensor (31) and generating at least one intermediate waypoint based on the image data. The method further includes adding at least one intermediate waypoint to the series of advanced waypoints of the navigation route, and navigating a robot from a starting position toward a destination position along the series of advanced waypoints and the at least one intermediate waypoint.
