The invention belongs to the technical field of hybrid electric vehicle control, and particularly relates to a method for controlling the maximum speed of a hybrid electric vehicle. The method comprises the steps of 1 receiving vehicle data, receiving vehicle speed, driver demand power, engine demand power and motor demand power, and determining a maximum speed limit state; 2 acquiring optimal economic data of the engine and the motor, measuring efficiency diagrams of the engine and the motor through experiments, and making respective optimal economic curves; 3 calculating the optimal economic rotating speeds of the engine and the motor under the respective required power, calculating the target rotating speed by considering the influence of the required power ratio of the engine and the motor and the rotating speed on efficiency, and calculating the target speed ratio through the target rotating speed, the vehicle speed and the main reduction ratio. The structure is reasonable, so that the power of the whole vehicle can be reasonably distributed, and the cruising ability and the fuel economy of the whole vehicle are improved.
