The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle in an automated driving mode by way of an assistance function for automated driving in consideration of a performance capability of the assistance function, the performance capability being reconciled with a performance demand in order to perform the assistance function. In the method, a performance demand for an upcoming driving situation is ascertained as a performance demand. Also provided according to the present invention is an apparatus that is configured to execute the method.
