The invention belongs to the technical field of traffic management and monitoring and particularly relates to a driving distance monitoring system and method. The system comprises a radar and a camerawhich are arranged above a road to be measured. A detection direction of the radar and a shooting direction of the camera both point to an extending direction of the road to be measured, reference lines perpendicular to the extending direction of the road are arranged on the road to be measured, the reference lines comprise a starting line and a monitoring line, and a distance between the starting line and the monitoring line is less than or equal to the minimum driving distance. In the invention, arrangement is reasonable, and the monitoring and evidence obtaining of the driving distance canbe realized by combining one radar, one camera and the reference lines; and on an image shot by the camera triggered by radar detection, whether the driving distance with a front vehicle meets the requirement or not can be directly judged according to a position relation between the reference lines and a motor vehicle, and the evidence obtaining requirement can be met through one image.
