The invention relates to an estimation method and system for the torque of a brake of an elevator traction machine. The estimation method comprises the following steps: when an elevator enters the sleep state and is in a preset brake detection cycle, entering a brake detection mode, and controlling the brake to hold tightly; driving an elevator inverter to apply preset driving torque to the elevator traction machine; collecting slide pulse numbers sent by an encoder of the elevator traction machine in real time, and obtaining the output current value of the elevator inverter; according to the slide pulse numbers and the output current value collected in the period of time of applying the preset driving torque, calculating the size of the torque of the brake; when the obtained torque of the brake is smaller than the rated torque of the brake, controlling the elevator to stop running or generating a warning fault report. For the condition that the torque of the brake is not enough, the method reports the fault and prompts and informs the elevator maintenance personnel to repair the elevator brake, therefore effectively protecting the safety of passegers.
