The invention provides a road traffic signal control method and system using video to detect pedestrian crossing. The method comprises the steps that S1, a pedestrian video image in a waiting area outside a crosswalk is acquired; S2, when a pedestrian traffic light is red, the number of pedestrians in the waiting area is calculated according to the pedestrian video image, and timing is carried out when the first pedestrian is acquired; S3, whether the number of the pedestrians in the waiting area exceeds a preset number or whether the waiting time of the first pedestrian exceeds preset time is judged, and step S4 is carried out if either is so, while returning to step S2 is carried out if both are not; and S4, the pedestrian traffic light becomes green. According to the invention, the pedestrian video image is acquired through video; the pedestrian traffic light automatically becomes green from red according to the number of the pedestrians or the waiting time; the waiting time of the pedestrians is reduced; and the traffic management efficiency is improved.
