Provided are a vehicular acceleration suppression apparatus and a vehicular acceleration suppression method such that acceleration suppression control can be activated appropriately. A travel control controller (10) determines the type of an obstacle (such as a wall, another vehicle, a curb, or a natural object) on the basis of at least an initial detection distance (La) which is a distance between a vehicle (MM) and the obstacle when the obstacle is initially detected, and a height determination distance (Lb) which is a distance between the vehicle (MM) and the obstacle when it is determined that obstacle is a tall obstacle. When it is determined that the vehicle (MM) is close to the obstacle by a preset proximity degree or more on the basis of the distance from the obstacle, acceleration suppression control is implemented in a control mode corresponding to the type result of the obstacle.
