The invention relates to a gauge pasting method for detecting transverse residual stress of a steel rail. The gauge pasting method is characterized in that a steel rail section which is 500 mm long is cut out from one end of the to-be-detected steel rail to be used as a detection piece, a point is selected from a position which is 10 mm away from each of two sides of the central point in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the detection piece to be used as a gauge pasting position with the center point on one side of the rail waist of the detection piece serving as the symmetry point, a strain gauge is pasted in each gauge pasting position, the length direction of each strain gauge is perpendicular to the axis of the detection piece, and the initial value of the residual stress is measured. The gauge pasting method has the advantages as follows: the method is simple, the gauge pasting positions and directions are selected reasonably, and the transverse residual stress of the steel rail can be detected quickly and accurately.
