The invention discloses a reminding method and system for recognizing traffic lights on the basis of an automobile video recorder. The method includes the steps that the automobile video recorder obtains and stores video information in real time through a camera, analyzes the video information and judges whether traffic light marks exist; when it is judged that the traffic light marks exist, an MCU of the automobile video recorder processes obtained traffic light images through an algorithm, and the current state of the traffic lights is judged; according to the current state of the traffic lights, corresponding voice reminders are sent to a driver. According to the method and system, the state of the traffic red light can be judged through the automobile video recorder, the reminders that a traffic accident is likely to happen if the driver runs the red light at a traffic crossing and an automobile is started after the green light lights are sent to the automobile driver, and safety of the automobile driver in the automobile driving process is improved.
