A three-dimensional object detection device wherein: it is determined whether it is daytime or nighttime when detecting a three-dimensional object on the basis of a captured image; when it was determined to be daytime the edge of a photographic subject in a first edge extraction region containing a horizon reference region, in which the horizon functions as a reference, is extracted and a threshold value for detecting a three-dimensional object on the basis of the intensity of the edge in the first edge extraction region is set; and when it was determined to be nighttime, the edge of a photographic subject in a second edge extraction region containing an end-of-road reference region, in which the end of a road functions as a reference, is extracted and a threshold value for detecting a three-dimensional object on the basis of the intensity of the extracted edge in the second edge extraction region is set.
