A method (400) for object weight estimation, including: training (402) an object identification model (300); receiving (404) one or more images from a camera (28) positioned on a machine (20) engaged in a lifting operation; feeding (406) each of the one or more images into the object identification model (300); receiving (408), from the trained object identification model (300), a predicted object corresponding to the object (30) to be lifted by the machine (20) and a probability that the predicted object corresponds to the object (30) being lifted by the machine (20); and estimating (412) a weight of the object (30) based on at least the predicted object and comparing the estimated weight to lifting parameters associated with the machine (20) when the probability is greater than a selected confidence threshold.
