An objective of the present invention is to provide an obstacle detection system and an obstacle detection method for a track traveling vehicle capable of accurately detecting forward obstacles on and near the track. The obstacle detection system comprises a monitoring area setting processing unit that sets an obstacle monitoring area in which to detect obstacles, a forward obstacle monitoring unit that uses a sensor that scans horizontally in front of a train to monitor obstacles inside the obstacle monitoring area, and an obstacle detection unit that detects an obstacle inside the obstacle monitoring area on the basis of a monitoring result from the forward obstacle monitoring unit, wherein the forward obstacle monitoring unit interpolates gaps in the detection region of the sensor at a first position with the detection region of the sensor during the travel of the train from the first position to a second position.
