A vehicle-mounted device according to one embodiment includes a receiver, a storage, an extracting unit, a determining unit, and a calculator. The receiver receives a first image acquired by capturing an image of a forward direction of a first vehicle with an image capturing unit. The storage stores therein a dictionary provided for each vehicle type, and containing a feature value of a vehicle belonging to the vehicle type. The extracting unit extracts a feature value of a second vehicle included in the first image. The determining unit reads the dictionary corresponding to a vehicle type to be determined from the storage, and determines a vehicle type of the second vehicle based on a similarity between the feature value contained in the read dictionary and the feature value of a second vehicle. The calculator obtains a first distance between a front end of the first vehicle and a rear end of the second vehicle based on the first image, and calculates a sum of the first distance and a length of a vehicle belonging to the vehicle type determined by the determining unit as a second distance between the front end of the first vehicle and a front end of the second vehicle.
