The vehicle-mounted device according to an embodiment is provided with a reception unit, a storage unit, an extraction unit, an assessment unit, and a calculation unit. The reception unit receives a first image obtained by an imaging unit having imaged the front of a first vehicle. The storage unit stores dictionaries provided by vehicle type, the dictionaries including feature values for vehicles of the vehicle types. The extraction unit extracts the feature value of a second vehicle in the first image. The assessment unit reads, from the storage unit, the dictionaries for the vehicle type to be assessed, and assesses the vehicle type of the second vehicle on the basis of the degree of similarity between the feature value included in the dictionaries that has been read and the feature value of the second vehicle. The calculation unit determines a first distance from the front end of the first vehicle to the rear end of the second vehicle on the basis of the first image, and calculates, as a second distance from the front end of the first vehicle to the front end of the second vehicle, the sum of the first distance and the length of a vehicle belonging to the vehicle type determined by the determination unit.
