The present invention is provided with road shoulder-detecting units (2a, 2b) for detecting a road shoulder (B) that is located on a road surface (A) by scanning the road surface (A) in front of a vehicle (1) in the traveling direction of the vehicle (1), and a road shoulder-measuring device (21a) for measuring the orientation of the vehicle (1) relative to the road shoulder (B) that was detected by the road shoulder-detecting units (2a, 2b) and the distance to the road shoulder (B), the two road shoulder-detecting units (2a, 2b) being disposed on the traveling-direction-side of the vehicle (1). The two road shoulder-detecting units (2a, 2b) are disposed at locations that are higher than the upper end of a front wheel (1d).
