THE function of the longitudinal control in an aeroplane is to provide at the will of the pilot a pitching moment of the necessary magnitude and the proper sign, to maintain (a) equilibrium throughout the range of angles of attack at which it is desired to fly the aeroplane; (b) a given angular velocity in pitch.
