Abstract Electron density profiles measured by the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar are used to derive the Hall- and Pedersen conductances and the characteristic energy of the incoming particles during events of strong particle precipitation. A relationship is sought between the Hall- to Pedersen conductance ratio, R, and the root mean square energy, Erms, which can be expressed by: E rms = A exp( R B ) where A and B are constants to be determined in the text.
