Abstract Routine observations of lower ionosphere electron densities are now available from the EISCAT radar facility. High resolution (3km in altitude) power profile measurements are obtained from the altitude interval 55–170km for approximately 400 hours per year, during continuous operations of 24 hours or more. Variations of D and E region electron densities as a function of solar zenith angle, during undisturbed conditions, and as a function of simulated 30MHz riometer absorption, during disturbed conditions, are presented.
