Abstract Flare energy release (plasma heating) is investigated using simple model considerations and soft-X-ray observations. It is shown that in order to heat and maintain the large amount of flare plasma at the high temperature, T>10 MK, it is necessary that the plasma be in a turbulent state and the energy release occur over a significant part of the plasma volume.
