Abstract We discuss the results derived from laboratory experiments with a turbulent current sheet that separates oppositely directed magnetic fields, by comparing them with energy release characteristics in solar flares. It is shown that the field topology in the sheet and energy release dynamics depend on the formation conditions for the current sheet. Acceleration mechanisms for protons are discussed.
