Abstract We give two examples of AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) products which can help forecasters analyse Meteosat imagery. At night, it may be impossible to detect low clouds over land or sea and to distinguish between high thick clouds and cirrus with infrared Meteosat imagery. These tasks can be easily accomplished with AVHRR data. A nighttime cloud classification algorithm, based on threshold tests applied to different combinations of AVHRR channels, is processed on all NOAA-11 AVHRR data received in the Centre de Meteorologie Spatiale in Lannion (France). A final four-bit image covering France is then derived and operationally delivered to forecasters through the French Meteotel network at the same scale and projection as Meteosat images for combined use. Interpreting Meteosat daytime images can also be difficult because of the confusion between snowy ground and clouds. This distinction is operationally done with AVHRR channel 3, but it is not yet sent to forecasters. These areas covered by snow could be combined to a four-bit daytime cloud classification and displayed at the same scale as Meteosat images on the Meteotel network.
