Abstract A study of the tonnage despatched by rail of five principal commodity groups shows that the comparative ranking of these five groups has not changed. However the proportions of their tonnages to the total tonnage despatched by rail reveals an increase in agriculture, forests and manufactures, while mining and animal products have decreased. The national production of nine selected commodities has been studied and compared with the tonnages of these traffics despatched by rail. The impact on the railroad industry of strip mining of coal is studied. It appears that this development will be inimical to the railroads and conduce to their losing coal traffic.
