The problem facing the vulnerability of the American freight railroad system in the twenty‐first century is that the potential for broad and unrestricted methods in which terrorists can strike has been created (Plant & Young, ). Thus, the question arises as to what steps can be taken to improve security management in order to advance the overall operations of the American freight railroad system. The data for this study were collected using a holistic methodology to encompass various sources of evidence, including documentation, archival records, direct observations, and physical artifacts. The findings revealed that due to the nature of freight railroading, a high risk exists for a terrorist attack. This study identified weaknesses, advocated security enhancements, and furthered the effectiveness of this essential transportation sector by recommending changes that increase the overall safety and security of freight railroading in the United States.
